All of the work of the Center is a product of collaboration across the three Programs. Specific project goals and needs define the level of involvement of each. Across programs, top priority is given to projects that are closely linked to the health needs of the people of the state of Missouri and the patients of MUHC.
Program in Health Services Research, Gordon D. Brown, Ph.D. , Interim Director
The IOM report, Crossing the Quality Chasm, has brought to national attention a long recognized finding that medical errors, poor quality, inefficiency, and increased costs are due not primarily to individual failure but to system failures. The Program in Health Services Research carries out an ambitious research agenda focused on developing and applying evidence on process improvement and process/outcome relationships. The Center develops and maintains large funded research grants to contribute to the literature and apply findings within MUHC and throughout Missouri.
The Director of the CHCQ provides leadership for the Program in Health Services Research and is assisted by the Associate Director. The Research Program is composed of the division of Evidence Research, Behavioral and Minority Research, the Missouri Cancer Registry, and Rural Health Services and maintains large funded research grants to contribute to the evidence-based literature and to apply findings within MU Health Care and throughout Missouri. The Program for Health Services Research carries out research on channeling controlled clinical evidence to patients and policy-makers, developing evidence-based solutions for improving health systems and processes, assessing behavioral health risks, exploring cancer incidence and outcomes, and developing collaborative rural health systems. Since 1998, the Office for Health Services Research has generated $3.5 million dollars in externally funded research, organized scientific conferences, held legislative briefings, and published scholarly papers.
