CHCQ Scholars

Senior Scholars

CHCQ Senior Scholars are widely recognized for scholarly work in an area central to the mission of the CHCQ. Recognition is reflected in such achievements as principal investigator on nationally competitive grants or recognition as a senior policy analyst. Senior Scholars serve as scientific leaders, teachers and mentors for other members of the Center. Each Senior Scholar maintains an active involvement in CHCQ projects. The CHCQ Director and Program Directors appoint Senior Scholars, reviewed annually, under guidelines established by the Governance Cabinet. The following is a list of current Senior Scholars.

Gordon D. Brown, Ph.D., is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Health Management and Informatics, School of Medicine, University of Missouri, Columbia. Dr. Brown served as a Scientist with the World Health Organization and held a faculty appointment at the Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia. He led the development of and served as a Fellow in the National Center for Managed Care at the University of Missouri and was on the faculty of the Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Brown holds an M.A and Ph.D. in Health Policy and Administration from the University of Iowa, and a B.S. in Industrial Administration from Iowa State University.
Karen E. Edison, M.D ., is a seasoned clinician, medical educator, and health policy leader.  She served as Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow and then majority health staff for the Health Education Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee in the United States Senate from 1999-2001, where she was instrumental in the legislative expansion of Medicare reimbursement for telehealth services. She returned to Missouri in 2001 where, in partnership with Dr. Kristofer Hagglund, she developed and fostered a university-wide, multidisciplinary Center for Health Policy. This Center works closely with CHCQ. Her current titles include Philip C. Anderson Professor and Chairman of the Department of Dermatology, Medical Director of the Missouri Telehealth Network, and Co-Director of the Center for Health Policy at the University of Missouri in Columbia .
Kristofer Hagglund, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in rehabilitation psychology and Associate Dean of the School of Health Professions. Dr. Hagglund serves as Co-Director of MU's Center for Health Policy. He has tenure as a Robert Wood Johnson Fellow. He serves as Director of Research in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Community Medicine, School of Public Health, St. Louis University.
Linda Headrick, MD, MS, is Senior Associate Dean for Education and Faculty Development and Professor of Medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She joined the University of Missouri in May 2002 from Case Western Reserve University and MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Dr. Headrick received her M.D. from Stanford University and served as Chief Resident in Medicine at the University of Maryland. She served as visiting professor to the Institute of Health and Community Studies, Bournemouth University, United Kingdom.
Lanis L. Hicks, Ph.D., is Professor with Health Management and Informatics, School of Medicine, at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She serves as the Coordinator of the Rural Health Policy Research Alliance in the Center for Health Care Quality. Dr. Hicks received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the School (College) of the Ozarks, in Business Administration/Education, and her Ph.D. in Health Economics from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She was a post-doctoral fellow at the Center for Community Health and Medical Care at Harvard University.

Michael Hosokawa, M.D., Ph.D.is the Associate Dean for Curriculum Development at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. He is also a professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Coordinator, Faculty Development, Director of Graduate Studies, and Co-Director of Family Medicine Fellowship. Dr. Hosokawa works closely with Dr. Kimberly Hoffman in curriculum innovation and assessment.

Marilyn Rantz, Ph.D., is currently Professor, University of Missouri-Columbia Sinclair School of Nursing and holds the named position of University Hospital Professor of Nursing. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Rantz holds a Ph.D. in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Masters of Science in Nursing from Marquette University, Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Illinois - Chicago, and Associate Degree in Nursing from Mercy Junior College in St. Louis, Missouri.

Resident Policy Scholar

David A. Fleming, MD, MA, FACP, holds a joint appointment as Associate Professor of Health Management and Informatics and Associate Clinical Professor, Department of Internal Medicine. He is Director of the Center for Health Ethics at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. Dr. Fleming received a B.A. in zoology, and an M.A. in microbiology from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and an M.D. from the University of Missouri School of Medicine.

Fellows

CHCQ Fellows are faculty and staff who work within the CHCQ, usually with a focus on specific projects. These junior and mid-level professionals are working to build a career of scholarly work in an area consistent with the mission of the CHCQ. They are among the best and brightest of MUHC faculty and staff. Most have participated in CHCQ leadership development programs. The CHCQ Director and Program Directors appoint CHCQ Fellows under guidelines established by the Governance Cabinet. Each appointment is renewed annually.

Suzanne Austin Boren, PhD, MHA, is a Clinical Instructor at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She coordinates a variety of health care research projects, including meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and randomized clinical trials. Her professional experience and peer-reviewed publications in health care emphasize the areas of continuing education for the professions, program planning and evaluation, continuous quality improvement, and research methodology. Dr. Boren has edited the proceedings of two international conferences focusing on the transfer of research evidence to improve health care practices and has chaired the organizing committee of an AHRQ sponsored conference in May 2002 to advance the business case for technological innovation that improves outcomes and protects patient safety.


George Demiris, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor, Department of Health Management and Informatics, School of Medicine, University of Missouri-Columbia. His focus is on telemedicine and telehome care research and application. Dr. Demiris holds a B.S. and M.S. in medical informatics from Ruprecht-Karls University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany, and Ph.D. from University of Minnesota, Minneapolis-St.Paul.

Kimberly Hoffman, Ph.D., is Director of Educational Evaluation, School of Medicine . She is a Research Assistant Professor, Department of Internal Medicine; Clinical Assistant Professor, Health Professions; and Adjunct Assistant Professor, Educational Leadership & Policy Analysis. Dr. Hoffman received her doctorate from the University of Missouri . Dr. Hoffman's research emphasizes the areas of contextual influences in clinical education, clinical teaching and learning, and evaluation in medical education. She works closely with Dr. Michael Hosokawa on curriculum innovations.

Naresh Khatri, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor, Department of Health Management and Informatics, School of Medicine, University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Khatri's areas of expertise are strategic management of human resources, transformational leadership, and cross-cultural management. Dr. Khatri received a B.Sc. from MD University, India; a M.Sc from National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, India; an M.B.A. from the Indian Institute of Management, and Ph.D. in Organization and Human Resources from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Tim Patrick, Ph.D., is Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Health Management and Informatics, School of Medicine, University of Missouri-Columbia. His areas of expertise are terminologies, vocabularies, data, and information systems. Dr. Patrick holds a B.A. and an M.A. in philosophy, an M.S. in Computer Science, and a Ph.D. in deontic logic from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Tamara Stone, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor, Department of Health Management and Informatics, School of Medicine, University of Missouri-Columbia. Her focus is on health care decision making on the part of providers and patients. Dr. Stone holds a B.S. in financial management from Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina; and an M.B.A. in information systems, and Ph.D. in decision science from St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri.

Affiliates

The Center for Health Care Quality invites a broad range of scholars, policy makers and teachers to receive information on Center activities, attend seminars and work shops and participate in Center projects. Affiliates can identify with the Center as an Affiliate of the Center for Health Care Quality. To become an affiliate an individual submits a request to the Center Director and states how the Center can be helpful to his/her professional interests and the level or type of involvement that would be most useful. Individuals will be invited as Affiliate members by the Director in accordance with guidelines by the Governance Cabinet. You may also become an affiliate by attending on of the CHCQ's Research Forums and signing the affiliate sign-up sheet. Don't by shy! Come on by!
