CHCQ, along with the School of Medicine, co-sponsored the visit by a distinguished delegation of three physicians from Sweden to give Grand Rounds on October 31, 2003. Michael Bergstrom, from the Swedish Federation of County Councils, is an international leader in the improvement of health care. He's also been key to Swedish federal sponsorship of education about quality and safety for medical students and other health professionals in training. Karin Pukk & Andreas Longueville are both at the Karolinska Institute, where they are working actively to create quality/safety learning for medical students. They met with various groups in the School of Medicine to exchange ideas and discuss patient safety and health care quality. The interaction was mutually beneficial and enlightening.

On March 26, 2004 , the Center for Health Care Quality hosted a mini-course entitled “Training the Trainer in Practice-Based Learning and Improvement.” The Quality Improvement in Medical Education (QIMED) national network tested a workshop designed to teach practice-based learning and quality improvement to physician educators. The course was created to attract and train program directors and others seeking to meet the Accrediting Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) core competency in practice-based learning and improvement, faculty interested in teaching medical students and residents to improve health care quality and safety, and clinicians and educators who wish to use improvement methods to make their own work more efficient and effective.
