Mentored Mini-Course

On March 26, 2004 , from 12:00-3:30pm , CHCQ will be sponsoring “Training the Trainer in Practice-Based Learning and Improvement: A Mentored Mini-course for Beginners.” The course will be co-facilitated by: Mary Coleman, MD, PhD, Associate Professor and Senior Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Louisville; Linda Headrick, MD, MS, Senior Associate Dean for Education and Faculty Development and Professor of Medicine, University of Missouri-Columbia; Paul Miles, MD, Vice President, Director of Quality Improvement and Assessment Programs in Pediatric Practice, American Board of Pediatrics; Ethel Smith, MD, Associate Professor of Family Medicine, Case Western Reserve University and Director, Quality Resource Center, MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland, OH; John X. Thomas, PhD, Associate Dean for Educational Programs, Jacob R. Suker Professor of Medical Education at Northwestern University Medical School; and Thomas Viggiano, MD, Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at Mayo Medical School. The course is open to faculty and staff of the University of Missouri , and aimed at program directors, faculty educators, and interested clinicians. European Union Center Conference:

“e-health: Current Status and Future Trends in the EU and the US ”

The European Union Center sponsored a conference entitled “ e-health: Current Status and Future Trends in the EU and the US ” held February 12 and 13, 2004 in Columbia , Missouri . This conference examined issues of e-health applications in the United States and Europe and the priorities set within eEurope 2005, the EU initiatives in ensuring privacy and confidentiality of health related data, and how those compare to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 in the United States . Other topics focused on the use of mobile technologies in health care (mHealth), “smart home” technologies, telemedicine applications that cross national borders, transatlantic collaborations in bioinformatics and the use of the Internet in health care. Furthermore, legislative efforts and ethical concerns associated with the diffusion of e-health were discussed and policies in the EU and the US were reviewed and compared.

Sue Vest, CTR, Project Manager was also selected to participate in a group presentation regarding education of cancer registrars. MCR staff also presented at the annual meeting of the Missouri State Tumor Registrars Association (MoSTRA) and at a regional registrar's meeting in St. Louis .

Awards

The Missouri Telehospice Project is also proud to announce that it received the International Catherine Pouget Award for Quality of Life at the End of Life Research in 2003 from the MAPI Research Institute. George Demiris is the Principal Investigator. $10,000.

The Missouri Cancer Registry (MCR) was awarded Gold Certification by the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR). This certification means that MCR met all criteria for timely, complete and accurate cancer data. The criteria can be found at http://www.naaccr.org/ .

The Missouri Cancer Registry received an 'A' from the Trust for American Health. We were one of only 12 states to receive an 'A'. More info at www.healthyamericans.org .
