Sue Boren, MHA, PhDAssistant Professor of Consumer Informatics, Health Management and Informatics Dr. Boren is an Assistant Professor of Consumer Health Informatics with the Department of Health Management and Informatics, School of Medicine, University of Missouri-Columbia and a Research Health Scientist with the Health Services Research & Development Program of the Harry S. Truman VA Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. Dr. Boren conducts a variety of health care research projects, including randomized clinical trials, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews on the practical value of various decision support technologies including peer-comparison feedback, reminders, telemedicine/distance technologies, computerized information services, interactive computerized patient education, cost analyses of clinical interventions, computerized management of chronic illness, and evidence-based patient education in chronic care. Her professional experience and peer-reviewed publications in health care emphasize the areas of continuous quality improvement and research methodology. Dr. Boren has edited the proceedings of an international conference focusing on the transfer of research evidence to improve health care practices and has chaired the organizing committee of a conference to advance the business case for technological innovation that improves outcomes and protects patient safety. |
Gordon Brown, PhDProfessor, Health Management and Informatics Dr. Brown has published and consulted extensively in the areas of strategic management and organization design in hospitals, nursing homes, and health clinics. He currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Accrediting Commission on Education for Health Services Administration, the National Professional Certification Committee in Nursing Home Administration, and is Chairman of the Faculty Forum in Managed Care of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration. |
Karen Cox, RN, PhDManager, Quality Improvement & Patient Safety, UMHC Dr. Cox has been with the Office of Clinical Effectiveness (OCE) at the University of Missouri since its inception, in 1997. Her areas of practice and research include population-based clinical outcomes improvement, healthcare operations redesign, organizational culture change as it relates to patient safety, and faculty, student, and staff curriculum development and instruction. As part of an OCE team, she leads design, development, implementation, and day-to-day operations of an enterprise-wide internal, secure, web-based quality of care/patient safety event reporting system for faculty, staff, and consumers. She received a B.S. in Nursing from Humboldt State University in California, followed by a Masters of Science in Nursing (1990) and a Ph.D. (2001) from the Sinclair School of Nursing at the University of Missouri, with a concentration in systems of care. Cox is one of two 2003-04 graduates representing Missouri in the AHRQ/VA National Patient Safety Improvement Corp. |

Her research interests include the influence of context in clinical teaching, developing new assessment strategies, and Portfolios to Promote Reflection and Assessment. Mr. Hooker has also given presentations addressing a wide array of issues included in his areas of expertise at national and local conferences and meetings. |
David R. Mehr, MD, MSProfessor and Director of Research, Department of Family and Community Medicine; Director, Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine Dr. Mehr joined the University of Missouri faculty in 1992. He received his MD degree from the University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine (1976). Following a residency in Family Medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia, he practiced in Columbia for nine years before completing a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine (1990) and a master's degree in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis (1989) at the University of Michigan. From August 2000 to August 2001, he spent a sabbatical at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. His research has focused on lower respiratory infections in nursing home residents, quality of care in nursing homes, end-of-life care, and most recently on improving chronic illness care. He is active on several quality improvement teams, including the hip fracture team, which he leads. A major professional responsibility is mentoring faculty and fellows. He has had major funding from AHRQ and NIA, and was a member of the HSOD study section at NIH, completing his term in June 2007. |

Kalyan Pasupathy, PhDAssistant Professor, Health Management and Informatics Dr. Kalyan Pasupathy, Assistant Professor of Health Systems Management obtained his degrees from Virginia Tech and has a background in operations management and systems engineering. Dr. Pasupathy's research interests include engineering health systems for improved safety, quality and value using system dynamics modeling, data mining and complex adaptive techniques, funded by various organizations. Prior to joining University of Missouri, he worked for the American Red Cross, national headquarters in Washington DC for four years, where he was part of and later led the operations research & analysis unit in corporate strategy. Some of the work Dr. Pasupathy did include performance and outcome measurement of the Red Cross chapters, service quality evaluation, resource allocation for the service delivery network, capacity utilization and financial forecasting. He also provides consulting support for organizations like the British Red Cross and health care organizations and institutions. |

He is co-developer of the Medical Practice Management Certificate, a course designed to provide busy physicians and department administrators with the business knowledge to manage a medical practice. He is actively leading and facilitating numerous improvement initiatives for the University of Missouri Health System. |
Susan D. Scott, RN, MS(N), CLNCCoordinator, Patient Safety, for University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics Sue received her Associate's of Science Degree in Nursing from Maryville College in 1977 and received her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing and Master's of Science in Nursing Administration from the University of Missouri - Columbia. Sue also maintains national certification as a legal nurse consultant. She serves on the UHC Quality /Patient Safety Improvement Committee, and the UHC Safety Committee. Scott was named as a project consultant for University Health Care Consortium's Survivability Project Team in 2006 . Sue has co-lead the institution's Wounded Healer or Second Victim Initiative and is serving as PI on a Qualitative Research Project to help describe this phenomenon. In her professional career, Scott has experience in Neonatal Intensive Care, neonatal transport, legal nurse consulting and quality improvement. In each of her professional roles, she has extensive experience in the field of healthcare quality improvement and patient safety initiatives. Sue joined the Office of Clinical Effectiveness team in April 2006. |
William C. Steinmann, MD, MScProfessor of Medicine; Vice Chairman, Department of Internal Medicine; Director, Division of General Internal Medicine; Interim Director, Division of Immunology & Rheumatology William Steinmann, MD '74, returned to the University after 16 years at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA, where he served as the Director of several centers including the Tulane Center for Clinical Effectiveness and Prevention. Dr. Steinmann also holds an MSc degree from the London school of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine at Oxford University. Currently he serves at the Vice Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, the Division Director of General Internal Medicine, and the Interim Division Director of Immunology & Rheumatology. Throughout his career, Dr. Steinmann has been an advocate for patient care quality, safety, and clinical effectiveness. His areas of research interest include clinical epidemiology, diagnostic decision-making, and effective clinical practices. |
Bonnie Wakefield, PhD, RNDirector of Health Services Research and Development, Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital Dr. Wakefield holds appointments as a Research Associate Professor in the Schools of Medicine and Nursing at the University of Missouri. Her program of research focuses on adverse events in acute care settings, including medication administration errors and functional outcomes in frail elderly patients; and application of innovative telehealth strategies to improve health care delivery. She was a co-developer of the Medication Administration Error Reporting survey, published in the 2005 AHRQ compendium on patient safety. She has also conducted funded research on delirium, dehydration, and functional decline in older hospitalized patients. Current research includes studies focused on information technology implementation in ambulatory care, workarounds in the medication process in hospitals, and evaluation of telehealth applications in home settings, including assisted living. |
John D. Whited, MD, MHS, FACPAssociate Chief of Staff, Research and Development, Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital Associate Professor, Division of General Internal Medicine, University of Missouri School of Medicine Dr. Whited received his medical degree from the West Virginia University School of Medicine and completed residency training at The Ohio State University Hospitals. He also completed an Ambulatory Care/General Internal Medicine Fellowship at the Durham VA Medical Center and the Duke University Medical Center. He received a MHS degree in Biometry from the Duke University School of Medicine. His research interests include telemedicine, diagnostic test evaluation, and economic evaluations. His telemedicine research has focused on dermatology and ophthalmology applications to include assessments of diagnostic reliability and accuracy, clinical outcomes, and economic analyses. |
